A Historic Royal Gun Salute at the Royal School Armagh

On Monday, 8th September 2025, the Royal School Armagh had the great honour of hosting a Royal Gun Salute to mark the Accession of His Majesty King Charles III. The salute took place at 12:00 noon on the school’s rugby pitch, with the Reviewing Officer being the Lord Lieutenant of County Armagh, The Right Honourable, The Earl of Caledon, KCVO, JP, whose presence lent distinction and grandeur to the occasion.

Founded in 1608 by King James I as part of a wider initiative to promote education in Ireland, the Royal School Armagh has a long history of service and tradition. Alongside the other four Royal Schools, it was granted Letters Patent by King Charles I in 1627 with the mission of advancing “the increase of Learning and Good manners”. Today, the school continues to maintain a boarding department and a thriving Combined Cadet Force, reflecting its distinctive heritage.

The 21-gun salute was conducted by 206 (Ulster) Battery of the Royal Artillery, fired from three 105mm Light Guns based in Newtownards, with support from a detachment in Coleraine. Following the salute, pupils from each year group had the opportunity to view the guns up close, creating a memorable and unique experience for all. The choice of the Royal School Armagh as the venue reflected its enduring connection to the monarchy and its role in fostering loyalty and service to the Crown.

The Headmaster, dignitaries, cadets, pupils of the Royal School Armagh and other guests observe the Royal Gun Salute at the Royal School Armagh.

Headmaster Mr. G.G.W. Montgomery commented:

“We were delighted and honoured that the school was selected as the venue for this Royal Gun Salute, which marked such an important event in the life of the nation. Royal Gun Salutes are usually fired in Royal parks or residences, and we think that this initiative to bring them to a Royal school was wonderful. This was a significant day in the life of the school and a memorable opportunity for the whole school community – pupils and staff alike – to witness something that most of us only ever see in a news clip.”

The occasion was further enriched by the contributions of the school community, with Year 14 pupil Gaby capturing photographs that will preserve this remarkable day for years to come.

The Royal Gun Salute will long be remembered as a landmark event in the history of the Royal School Armagh, combining tradition, history, and a sense of national pride in a truly unique way.
