KS3 Curriculum

From Year 8-10, all pupils study Technology and Design. They have two 35mins periods per week. During these years, the emphasis lies in developing pupils practical and design skills. Pupils engage in a variety of project work involving computer programming, manufacturing using woods and plastics, circuit manufacture and design activities.

KS4 Curriculum

At the Royal School we follow the CCEA GCSE specification (link below)

GCSE Technology and design builds upon and further develops the skills attained from KS3 and consists of both coursework and a written examination. It actively encourages the engagement of pupils in the design process in order to solve a problem for each of their own project scenarios. Pupils will be expected to make informed decisions throughout their projects, combining both the knowledge and understanding of design and the quality of products and systems. Pupils will explore the ways in which aesthetics, technical, economic, environmental, ethical and social dimensions interact with shape design and manufacture. The skills of creativity and analysis will be used in order to make links between existing solutions, technological knowledge and the principles of good design.

KS5 Curriculum

AS Level Technology and Design builds upon and further develops the skills attained from GCSE and consists of both coursework and a written examination. It actively encourages the engagement of pupils to develop and sustain their creativity and innovative practice through the various stages of the design process. Pupils will be expected to draw on and apply knowledge; understanding and skills of production processes to a range of design and technological activities in order to develop their understanding of contemporary design and technology practices. Pupils will be provided with the opportunity to prototype using digital and real manufactured models of the final product.

A2 Level Technology and Design builds upon and further develops the skills attained from AS Level and consists of both coursework and a written examination. It actively encourages the engagement of pupils in the use of tacit knowledge and reflective practices in order to fulfil tasks that are challenging and often require definition. Pupils will be expected to recognise and overcome challenges and constraints when working towards the production of a high-quality product. Pupils will develop a critical understanding of the influences of the processes and products of design and technological activities from a contemporary and historical perspective. Pupils will be provided with the opportunity to use digital technologies and information handling skills to enhance their design and technological capability.
