Subject Information

The aim of the Sociology department is to make you think about the social world in an entirely different way. It challenges preconceptions about life and makes you critically analyse institutions and political policies. We study the ways that our world is changing today, not only in Britain but across the world, examining a wide variety of influences from the impact of new technologies to the changing nature of personal relationships. Sociology explores the multiple forms of power and inequality in the world today and how they affect the lives of all of us. By joining together the social, cultural, political and economic dimensions of social life, Sociology gives you the tools you need to understand the key events of our time and how they are linked to the main forces and institutions that shape the modern world. Pupils need to have an interest in the world around them and be willing to keep up with current affairs.

As well as developing an understanding of modern societies and of how they are changing today, students acquire a wide range of transferable skills such as the ability to write clearly and analytically about complex issues, to engage effectively in argument and debate, and to analyse qualitative and quantitative data. Previous students of the course have commented on the usefulness of their sociological knowledge at university, no matter the course they have studied.

Sociology does not limit the range of options to be studied at degree. Previous pupils have gone on to study law, medicine, social work, business, journalism and actuarial science to name but a few. The range is wide! Degrees in the subject can also be used in a wide range of careers.
